On Oct.15th 2012, the delegation of Shanghai Juke Biotech Park reached the destination of the trip: Malta. The trade and investment bureau, Malta Enterprise gave a warm welcome to the delegation, and led delegates to investigate the development of local biotech industry.

Located in central Mediterranean, Malta is surrounded by sea, north of Italy, Tunisia, South Libya, east of Greece, Egypt. It has a prominent strategic position. The country joined the EU in 2004 and became a Schengen country in 2007.

Mr. Jianming SUN, the vice GM and Dr. Jiong ZHANG, GM of JUKE has already visited Malta in 2011 and 2012, separately. These prior visits paved the way to the enterprise delegation visit to Malta for seeking the possibilities of business development. For welcoming the delegation, Mr. Meikun LIU, the Commercial Counsellor of China in Malta Consulate attended the meeting and gave an introduction about the preferential policies and the prospects of investing in Malta for Chinese bio pharmaceutical enterprises in details.

The capabilities in medicine and life science of Malta University stood out on at the European level. It trains high quality talents needed in the bio-pharmaceutical industry. Also, the country offers advantages in terms of income tax deduction on investments, tariff reductions and other tax incentives for overseas companies. Furthermore, Malta provides low interest loans, lease, work permit, employment and training subsidies. Hence, thanks to its strategic localization, Malta has become a great gateway for Chinese goods to enter other EU countries and a great transit point towards North Africa and the Middle East.

As the member of the European Union, companies operated in Malta must abide by the strict EU standards and regulations which are applicable in other EU countries, but enjoy the favorable policies and low cost in Malta. Malta gave them the opportunity to seize the chance to develop on the European market. This is also the motivation make the famous pharmaceutical companies such as Actavis, ArrowPharma and Siegfried implanted themselves in Malta for R&D and manufacture.

The completion of Malta Science Park is scheduled by 2014. It is ideally located beside the Malta University and the largest local public hospitals, forming a gathering of academic and clinical resources. As for attracting foreign investment, Chinese enterprises are regarded as the potential candidates to Malta as well as entering the European market.
